Your character cannot move, so you stop pressing everything until the effect ends. That response can waste options if the effect is a root rather than a stun. In many games, roots restrict movement while leaving some attacks or non-movement abilities available; stuns typically restrict a broader set of actions.
The exact implementation belongs to the game and ability, not to a universal dictionary. An effect can combine several restrictions, and an ability involving movement may be unavailable even when another spell remains usable. Read the current tooltip and official documentation for the title you are playing.
Ask which actions are blocked
League of Legends offers a useful documented distinction. Riot’s 25.06 patch notes describe fixing a bug that could prevent attacking after an attack-move attempt while rooted. That is evidence that being rooted should not simply be treated as a blanket inability to attack.
A historical example shows why combinations matter too: in patch 10.22 in 2020, Riot changed Amumu’s ultimate from a root plus disarm to a stun. The separate words described different restrictions. That old patch is an illustration of terminology, not a current duration or balance guide.
For your own game, make a short comparison in an appropriate training mode. Check ordinary movement, basic attacks, a non-movement ability and a movement ability separately. Record the game version and the exact effect. Do not infer all four outcomes from whether the character appears frozen.
Turn the distinction into a calmer response
An illustrative encounter might leave a rooted ranged character able to attack a nearby target while unable to close distance to another. The useful decision is about range and permitted actions, rather than repeatedly clicking a distant destination.
Also check removal and immunity rules independently. An item that removes one category may not remove every disabling effect, and damage may end some effects while leaving others unchanged. These details can change through updates.
When reviewing a defeat, identify the status effect before blaming input delay. A clear note such as “movement blocked; ranged attack still available” gives you something to practise. It replaces the vague label “I was stunned” with the actual choices the game allowed.
